| Slicing
through the heart of New England, the Connecticut River meets the sea at
Long Island Sound. Indeed, the name of this river and the name of this
state come from "quinnehtukqut," an Indian word for "beside
the long tidal river."
Adriaen Block, a Dutch explorer, came here in
1614. Plymouth's Edward Winslow arrived in 1632, and it was the English
pioneers who made the most of this land's opportunities. |

Connecticut is sited in the southwest corner of New England. Much
of it is 'twixt two major
watersheds (Hudson River to its west, CT River running right up the
middle). As a result, it is built by Nature
to host farming perhaps more than the other New England states.
Today this
is an industrial land, but somehow able to retain much of its original
beauty.
