"downeast?" When you sail from Boston, that's how you go
both downwind and eastward toward England -- right along the Maine coast,
in the northeast corner of New England. That rockbound shoreline and some 2,000 islands are gifts of
long-gone glaciers.
It is believed that in 1000 A.D. the Norseman Leif Ericson's crew
landed here. In 1498 Italian John Cabot may have been here, too. The
first real settlement was in 1607. However, development was slow due
to the harsh weather and comparably poor soil, and it wasn't until the
Missouri Compromise that Maine became a state in 1820.

Afterward,
development really ramped up. Timber, shipbuilding and manufacturing
became primary industries. Today the Pine Tree State is also
vacation central for many from the rest of the U.S. as well as Canada.
