| Was
RI visited by Verrazano in 1524? Maybe. What is sure, though,
is that when Roger Williams was kicked out of Massachusetts in 1635, he
had within a year begun a settlement at Providence. Other seekers of
religious freedom (i.e., Puritan "exiles" including Jews and
Quakers) joined him. By 1644 there was a royal patent to secure the
lands, and an English charter was finally granted in 1663.
Diversified milling became an economic center. Tucked in the
southeast corner of New England, today the state is as
known for its manufacturing skills as for its coastline resorts. |
