The Abenaki (a tribe of the Algonquin nation) were already in residence when Samuel de Champlain came for a visit in 1609.  However, it is from him that we get the name Vermont, meaning "green mountains."  Settlers arrived largely from Massachusetts and Connecticut.  Located in the northwestern corner of New England, the land was also claimed by both New Hampshire and New York, thus creating the history and the legend of the Green Mountain Boys under Col. Ethan Allen.  In January, 1777, Vermont was declared an independent republic.

If maple sugar is a symbol of Spring, then the state's covered bridges and brightly colored leaves seem to be married in a glorious celebration of Autumn.  Sorry to break the aura, but the bridges weren't really meant just to build nostalgia.  They were covered simply as a way to protect their framing timbers from Vermont's challenging weather.  Even so, we are granted complete permission to enjoy them!
